Inspired by their favorite luxury hotel bathrooms around the world, these Beverly Hills homeowners transformed their rustic master bath into a sleek and modern sanctuary.
The stunning transformation updated a prior bathroom remodel. After purchasing the home in 1998, the homeowners began the monumental task of renovating nearly every inch of the interior. “We gutted the house down to being able to see through the entire building from end to end," the homeowner says. "Everything went except for the chimneys and fireplaces.”

“We decided to go all out and make the bathroom radically different, though still making sure the design would gel with the style of the house.” Homeowner
Dated finishings and faux-Tudor details were replaced with a rustic Spanish Revival style that better suited the California climate and lifestyle. However, one aspect of the renovation turned out to be less livable than anticipated: The honed marble tile flooring in the master bathroom featured a wide grout that was nearly impossible to keep clean.
Recently the homeowners decided to update the flooring to something more functional — but upon realizing how much of the old bathroom would need to be removed in order to replace the floors, they were inspired to take it a step further and do a full renovation. “We decided to go all out and make the bathroom radically different, though still making sure the design would gel with the style of the house,” the homeowner says.
Having recently completed a kitchen remodel on their own, the homeowners opted to work without an interior designer on the bathroom update. Instead, they took design cues from some of their favorite luxury hotel bathrooms around the world. The homeowner, an Emmy-winning director and twice Oscar-nominated cinematographer, once spent six months at the Dorchester in London during film production and was inspired by the luxurious finishings. The Hazelton Hotel in Toronto and the Crown in Melbourne provided inspiration for the bathroom’s dark and dramatic color palette.
Functionality was paramount in the redesign — with an emphasis on improved storage, easy maintenance, and durable materials — so the product selection process led them to Robern storage solutions.
“The build quality and modality were clear to us from early in the selection process. The feel of the drawers and doors, as well as the modular design, was a plus.” Homeowner
Two AiO Lighted Medicine Cabinets provide customizable storage with innovative features including integrated audio, USB charging, and electrical outlets. “The features of the lit cabinets — which include power outlets and custom adjustments of the shelves, as well as the brightness of the built-in lights compared to competing products — made our decision,” the homeowner says.
For the bathroom vanities, the Cartesian Collection from Robern was selected for its superior design flexibility. The wide array of color options and best-in-class modularity allowed the homeowners to create a personalized storage solution that fit seamlessly into the existing space and coordinated with the room’s dark wall tiles.
“The build quality and modality were clear to us from early in the selection process,” the homeowner says. “The feel of the drawers and doors, as well as the modular design, was a plus.” The homeowners reached out to Robern during the ordering process and were connected with a retailer in New York who assisted them with selecting the correct components to fulfill their vision.
For the finishing touch, the homeowners mounted a fireplace above the bathtub and incorporated accents from their previous bathroom design — including hooks, soap dishes, cup holders, and towel racks from Czech & Speake — to give their contemporary renovation a personal and timeless touch. The updated room “feels surprisingly more spacious, despite the darker wall and floor coverings,” the homeowner says. “The fact the room feels fresh, clean, and sleek — in calming tones and with easy access to the hidden grooming ‘stuff’ — makes it a real pleasure to spend time there.”
